RT NEWS - WINTER 2007

A newsletter exclusively for Redlands Tourism Members

Our New Home

Did you know that the Redland Shire Visitor Information Centre has relocated to bigger, better premises just a short stroll from the Cleveland railway station at the Raby Bay Harbour complex, 2/152 Shore Street West, Cleveland.

Staffed by the friendly and experienced team from Redlands Tourism (RT), including a band of dedicated volunteers, the centre is open 7 days per week to provide up-to-date information and impartial advice on what to see and do in our region.

Funded by Redland Shire Council until November 2007, it is complemented by the North Stradbroke Island Visitor Information Centre which RT operates in is own right at Dunwich.

Latest RT figures show that for the March 2007 quarter, almost 2000 people paid a visit to our Cleveland centre, while some 2600 dropped into the North Stradbroke Island Centre for information and advice.

Tourism Development Coordinator, Vanessa Ivanisevic, says that although a great many people seek out the services of the Visitor Information Centre on line these days (with the www.redlandstourism.com website currently averaging approximately 4000 unique visits per month), the steady numbers of visitors through the doors show there is also a strong need for front-end service.

“A lot of people still value the personalized, face-to-face service we offer and you’ll always have people seeking a last minute cut-through to what they’re after, via a single, comprehensive advisory service like ours,” Vanessa said.

Links & Drinks

Find out how you can promote your product or service outside our region - as well as locally - over a fun evening of food and drinks at the Lighthouse Restaurant, Cleveland, on Wednesday 25th July. Alternatively, you can also take advantage of this service on Stradbroke Island, which will be held towards the end of July or early August, however the venue is yet to be confirmed.

Mr Hassan Adhami from Ticketmates.com will be our special guest speaker at these members’ networking evenings. RT has recently joined Ticketmates, which provides an easy to use, e-ticket selling tool in place of old fashioned, manual vouchers. Ticketmates provides yet another distribution channel for Redlands tourism businesses to gain national exposure and boost sales. Come and learn more – and enjoy the great hospitality.

The fun kicks off at 6pm until 8pm at the Lighthouse Restaurant, 1 Paxton Street, Cleveland Point Heritage Precinct, on Wednesday 25th July. Entry is just $15 for members ($25 for non-members) and includes drinks and nibblies.

RT Volunteers in Hot Demand

The non-for-profit organisation secured assistance in April to appoint a Volunteer Coordinator for the Visitor Information Centres at Cleveland and North Stradbroke Island. New recruit, Maureen Bartlam, who has a background in office administration, retail and customer service, now heads a team of 19 local volunteers who support local tourism.

Ranging in age from 20-something to 60-plus, our volunteers come with a diverse range of work and life skills - plus a truck-load of enthusiasm for the Redlands and all it has to offer!

Every day, the team actively promotes local businesses and tourism in our Visitor Information Centres, but there’s more! Our volunteers mean we can now have a presence at important local events, like the Little Ships Club Jazz Festival at North Stradbroke Island on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Five RT volunteers manned an onsite information stand and raffled off items donated by local business operators – a huge thanks to them!

Coming up, our volunteers will be at the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance community celebration at Dunwich State School on 11th July; the Macleay Island Business Expo on the weekend of 14th & 15th July; plus a special Work Life Balance workshop at Cleveland Community Hall on 8th August (Please refer to Work Life Balance at bottom of page**).

In return, Maureen says volunteering can be a rewarding experience as well as an opportunity to engage with the local community and develop new skills. “Though the Australian Skills Voucher Program, Redlands Tourism is able to offer eligible volunteers the opportunity to complete Certificate II in Tourism and Customer service. The course will be delivered here in the Redlands by the Career Training Institute of Australia one day per month over 5 months and we hope to include as many of our volunteers as possible,” Maureen explains.

The promotional film (approximately 13 minutes) will provide an overview of the 4 key components of our region – the Mainland; North Stradbroke Island; Coochiemudlo Island; and the Southern Bay Islands. Filming is underway in each of the key destinations, and it is hoped that the final cut will be launched in the Spring. The film will be used to promote our region on line at www.redlandstourism.com.au; in Visitor Information Centres; and at select events including tourism trade shows.

The full colour, comprehensive A4 guides have become the ‘bibles’ of what to see, where to stay, what to do and how to get around in the Redlands – both on the mainland and in the bay. Copies have been literally walking out the door at both our local Visitor Information Centres, proving popular with tourists and residents alike.

Meanwhile, our Winter / Spring issue of ‘What’s on Where’ is due out this month providing useful maps and operator listings for our customers.
