Sustainable Tourism Committee up for an Award

The North Stradbroke Island Sustainable Tourism committee is entering a Keep Australia Beautiful - Plastic Bay Reduction Award to raise the profile of North Stradbroke Island and the good work that is being done by the committee but most importantly to raise awareness of what plastic is doing to our environment.

Over the past 3 years the North Stradbroke Island Sustainable Tourism Committee Auspice by Redlands Tourism and in conjunction with the Redland Shire Council and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have begun promoting the eradication of plastic bags on North Stradbroke Island.
It is the objective of all those involved with this project that all operators on the island would cease using traditional HDPE plastic bags.
Those involved are well on the way to achieving this objective, with the island operators using the alternative of environmentally friendly, biodegradable cornstarch bags along with paper bags and boxes.
The cornstarch bags serve the same purpose as the traditional plastic bags, however they have been design to break down in water within 6 days and can be easily added to your compost to breakdown in a similar amount of time. This is in comparison to the normal plastic bag that can take between 15 and 1000 years to breakdown.
North Stradbroke Island is the first Island to introduce banning plastic bags and this campaign will continue for many years to come.
Plastic bags have a devastating effect on marine life and on the environment in general, and it is the objective of this motivated group to educate the local and wider community on the benefits of reducing the use of plastic bags and hopefully ceasing it all together!

Ecotourism Workshop

The Ecotourism/Nature Based Workshop was held on Thursday 6 July in Cleveland.
The agenda for the day included
· The ECO Certification Program - what is it all about
· What is involved in gaining certification
· How will certification benefit your business
· How has the ECO Certification Program benefited local operators.
The workshop provided a practical forum for operators considering ECO Certification or simply wanting to know a little more. At the workshop, attendees received a FREE copy of the ECO Certification Program Application (usual cost $85.00).

If you were one of the operators that would have liked to of participated in this workshop but unfortunately was unable to be there on the day could you please contact Patsy to register your interest in lobbying Tourism Queensland to repeat the Ecotourism Workshop.

Redlands Tourism Websites

As you may be aware Redlands Tourism has recently been given an opportunity to participate with a program called Job Futures. This program is designed for a non-profit organisation to have a website designed FREE. In the past few weeks we have been experiencing some technical difficulties with the transferring of one service provider to another. This has caused endless issues with both sites, however I have been assured that all issues will be resolved within this next week. So thank you to those operators that brought this to our attention and a big thank you for your patients during this difficult period.

Volunteer Program

This year Redlands Tourism commenced a project where we have inducted volunteers to perform a “Roaming Information Service” throughout the Shire. This will allow us to:
· Enhance the visitor experience
· Participate and represent Redland Tourism and other partners in local and external events, festivals and the like
· Provide a unique Welcome Service-to visitors coming to the Shire
· Be a vital part of value adding, in the distribution of tourism and local information and information services to residents and visitors
· Demonstrate the pride they have in the Redlands and the Tourism products and the overall purpose of the interests of the Redlands Community

The volunteers will also be involved with the following campaigns:
· Welcome Wagon- Welcomes at the Cleveland Railway Station and Islands.
· Representation - Attendance at Redlands Tourism Functions and those of the partners
· Presentations and representations to local sporting & cultural groups and act as assistants when there are special events being conducted by such organizations.
· Visitor Surveys - Visitor observation of behaviour patterns and the distribution of information, material and local regulations at Boat Ramps, Parks and similar locations where visitors may gather.
· Roaming Information Service - Providing information services at local markets, events and shopping centres in the Region.
· Welcome services to visiting groups and tourist buses
· Festival and Event Information Services- To provide professional, coordinated and consistent services for the cooperative benefit of event organizing committees and local tourism.
· Promote the Redland Region, with the Redlands Tourism Information Van throughout the region and elsewhere, using modern marketing techniques including, audio/visual presentations, merchandising and product sampling

The campaign strategies will be prioritised to give maximum impact and benefit to the region, having regard to resources, obligations and promotional / community benefit.
