Helping you create an edible garden
Welcome to our Spring edition newsletter. Judging by the turnout at the annual Brisbane Organic Growers Fair on Sunday, there are certainly many people considering the benefits of growing some of their fresh food at home. Our newsletter and website attempt to give guidance to those at various stages down the path to establishing an edible garden or productive patio. Fresh is best.
Now is a great time to get a few trees in, whether they may be planted in the garden or established in tubs. We are able to supply a wide range of fruit trees that are suitable for both instances. Call us for a quote on your requirements. SPECIAL -St Helena Olive, planted in a 220mm Patio Tub $27. All trees come with Free fertiliser for 12 months.
There are quite a few varieties of Basil available but the main 2 we seem to grow as home gardeners are Sweet Basil and Thai Basil. The aromatic leaves are attributed with important medicinal properties. Basil loves growing in a sunny spot in MWDOS (moist well drained organic soil). Harvest leaves as required and regularly take a woody stem off just above the 2 tiny lowest leaves to encourage new fresh growth. Apply Fish and Kelp liquid fertiliser every fortnight or so. Basil has an affinity with tomato dishes and is easy to make into a Pesto.
1 cup washed basil leaves
100g pine nuts
100g grated parmesan
2 or 3 peeled cloves of garlic
Blend, adding olive oil and salt to desired consistancy.

With the weather certainly starting to warm up quickly, now is the time to think about setting up a watering system to keep your valuable plants moist. If you have put in a tank, a highly efficient method of making use of that water is through the use of these little clay Wet Pots. Spend your summer doing what you enjoy, knowing the Wet Pots will be working at home to keep your garden looking great.
Ants climbing on your citrus trees are an almost sure sign that the tree is under attack from a sap sucking insect. The ants do no harm but feed on the honey dew secreted from the likes of aphids and mealybug. These insects spread disease, distort the leaves and cause the fungus, black sooty mold to develop on the leaves and stems. Look for these green or black aphids on the newly formed leaves and buds. Natural predators include lacewings and ladybirds. Control is easy and safe with Eco-Oil or Long Life Pyrethrum.
The next show we'll be attending is the Retirement and Lifestyle Expo held at the RNA show ground between October the 19th and 21st.
Searles have released a new fully certified organic potting mix which is great to use to grow your herbs and veg in planters close to the kitchen. We have it available in 30 litre bags.
